Herbal Supplements

Herbal Supplements gathers our plant-based food supplements in one place: ashwagandha, berberine and turmeric, ginseng and bacopa, plus milk thistle, maca, tribulus, boswellia, oregano, horsetail and lion's mane. Most come as capsules from Essensey, NOW Foods, Trec Nutrition, OstroVit and Source Naturals, with a few gummies and liquids.

Find a herb by name

  • Ashwagandha: KSM-66 and standard root extracts in capsules, plus Trace Minerals gummies.
  • Berberine: 500mg to 1000mg-a-day capsules and tablets, some paired with turmeric.
  • Turmeric: currently a berberine and turmeric combination capsule.
  • Adaptogens & Botanicals: Korean ginseng and bacopa monnieri.

Other botanicals in the range

Beyond those four sections you will find NOW Foods Milk Thistle with Artichoke & Dandelion and Essensey Milk Thistle 500mg, Essensey Maca, Tribido Max Tribulus and Boswellia Serrata, NOW Foods Oregano 450mg, OstroVit Horsetail and OstroVit Lion's Mane Extract powder, and Nature's Answer Astragalus Root as a 30ml liquid.

Buying herbal supplements sensibly

  • Check the extract: a label may give the plant weight, an extract ratio or a standardised marker such as withanolides. Branded extracts like KSM-66 name the exact material used.
  • Check the plant part (root, leaf or seed) and the Latin name, because different parts and species are not interchangeable.
  • Compare the daily serving, not the capsule: one product may need two capsules a day, another one.
  • No herb has an authorised health claim in the UK yet, so we describe what each product contains and how it is taken rather than promising effects.
  • Herbs can interact with medicines. Speak to a pharmacist before starting one if you take prescription medicine, and avoid herbal supplements in pregnancy unless your midwife or GP agrees.

Herbal Supplements: your questions answered

Why don't you say what each herb does?

UK law only allows authorised health claims on food supplements, and no herbal ingredient has one yet. We describe the plant, the extract and how to take it, and leave effects off the page.

What does standardised extract mean?

It means the extract is made to contain a set amount of a marker compound, such as withanolides in ashwagandha, so each batch is consistent. Branded extracts such as KSM-66 go further by naming the exact material.

Can I take herbal supplements with my medication?

Check with a pharmacist first. Several herbs, berberine in particular, are known to interact with prescription medicines.

Are herbal supplements suitable in pregnancy?

Most have not been tested in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so avoid them unless your midwife or GP has agreed. Products for pregnancy belong in a dedicated prenatal range.

Do you sell liquid herbal extracts?

Yes, Nature's Answer Astragalus Root comes as a 30ml liquid, and OstroVit Lion's Mane is an extract powder. Most other herbs in this section are capsules or tablets.
