Supplement or medicine? Know which you are buying
This range mixes two kinds of product. Probiotics, enzymes, fibre, greens and sodium butyrate are food supplements. Most of these ingredients have no authorised health claim in the UK, so we describe them by what they contain. Tums (a calcium carbonate antacid) and Pepto Bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) are US over-the-counter medicines, and Boiron products are homeopathic remedies, with more in Homeopathy. For these, use them only as the label directs, and ask a pharmacist first if you are pregnant, take other medicines or are buying for a child.
When to see a GP instead
Supplements are not a treatment for digestive conditions. See your GP about ongoing bloating or stomach pain, a change in bowel habit lasting three weeks or more, blood in your poo or unexplained weight loss, and use our range for everyday routines alongside a fibre-rich diet and plenty of water.
Probiotics & Gut Support: your questions answered
What is the difference between probiotics and digestive enzymes?
Probiotics are live bacterial cultures, measured in CFU (colony-forming units). Digestive enzymes are proteins such as protease, lipase and amylase, taken with meals, and contain no live bacteria.
Are Tums and Pepto Bismol supplements?
No, they are over-the-counter medicines: Tums is a calcium carbonate antacid and Pepto Bismol contains bismuth subsalicylate. Pepto Bismol contains a salicylate, so ask a pharmacist first if you are sensitive to aspirin, pregnant or buying for anyone under 16.
Do probiotics need to be kept in the fridge?
It depends on the product, so follow the storage line on the label. Many capsules are shelf-stable if kept cool and dry, but some need refrigeration after opening.
Can I take a probiotic and a digestive enzyme together?
Yes, they are different types of product and are often taken in the same routine. Follow each label and take the enzyme with a meal.
Which of these products are vegetarian?
Check each label. Jarrow Fem-Dophilus uses a vegetarian capsule, while NOW Super Enzymes contains animal-derived ox bile.
