How strong is a Pepto-Bismol Ultra caplet?
Each caplet contains 525 mg of bismuth subsalicylate, twice the 262 mg in an Original caplet, so one Ultra caplet is a full dose. The box of 24 caplets therefore holds 24 doses.
How many Ultra caplets can I take, and how often?
Adults and children 12 and over swallow 1 caplet with water every half hour as needed, or 2 caplets every hour for diarrhoea. Don't chew them, and never take more than 8 caplets in 24 hours.
What do the caplets relieve?
Per the US Drug Facts: diarrhoea, travellers' diarrhoea, and upset stomach from overindulging in food and drink, including heartburn, indigestion, nausea, gas, belching and fullness. If you have diarrhoea, drink plenty of clear fluids as well.
Who shouldn't take Pepto-Bismol Ultra?
Don't take it if you're allergic to salicylates such as aspirin, already take another salicylate, or have an ulcer, a bleeding problem, or bloody or black stool. Children and teenagers who have or are recovering from chickenpox or flu-like symptoms must not use it because of the risk of Reye's syndrome.
Can I take it with other medicines, or when pregnant?
Ask first. Each caplet contains 199 mg of salicylate, so the label says to check with a doctor or pharmacist if you take medicine to thin the blood or for diabetes, gout or arthritis, and to ask a health professional before use if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Why has my tongue gone black?
It's a temporary, harmless darkening of the tongue and/or stool that bismuth subsalicylate can cause. Stop and see a doctor if symptoms get worse or last more than 2 days, or if you notice ringing in the ears or hearing loss.
Ultra or Original caplets?
Both are tasteless, swallow-whole caplets with the same uses and the same limit of 8 doses a day. An Original caplet holds 262 mg, so a dose is 2 caplets and a 24-pack gives 12 doses; Ultra puts the whole dose in 1 caplet, so the same size box gives 24 doses.
