What is Pepto-Bismol Ultra used for?
The US Drug Facts for Pepto-Bismol Ultra list travellers' diarrhoea, diarrhoea, and upset stomach from overindulgence in food and drink, including heartburn, indigestion, nausea, gas, belching and fullness. Each 15ml dose contains 525mg bismuth subsalicylate.
How much do I take?
Adults and children 12 and over: shake well and use the dose cup provided. Take 15ml every half hour, or 30ml every hour, as needed for diarrhoea, and 15ml every half hour as needed for overindulgence symptoms, with no more than 8 doses (120ml) in 24 hours.
How is Ultra different from original Pepto-Bismol liquid?
Ultra is twice as concentrated as Pepto-Bismol Liquid Regular, so the same 15ml cup carries 525mg of bismuth subsalicylate. Follow the directions on whichever bottle you're using rather than swapping doses between them.
Can children or teenagers take it?
Not under 12 without a doctor's advice. Children and teenagers who have, or are recovering from, chickenpox or flu-like symptoms shouldn't use it, because of the risk of Reye's syndrome.
Who shouldn't take Pepto-Bismol Ultra?
Don't take it if you're allergic to salicylates (including aspirin), take other salicylate products, or have an ulcer, a bleeding problem or bloody or black stools. Check with a pharmacist or GP first if you take blood thinners or medicines for diabetes, gout or arthritis, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a fever or mucus in your stools.
Why has my tongue turned black?
That's a known, temporary and harmless effect — the label says your stool and tongue may darken. Stop and see a doctor if symptoms get worse or last more than 2 days, or if you notice ringing in the ears or hearing loss.
12oz or the 16oz bottle?
Same 525mg per 15ml strength. This 354ml bottle holds about 23 doses, while Pepto Bismol 16 oz 473ml Ultra Liquid Cherry holds about 31 and is cherry flavoured.
