Your questions, answered
Is Max-Strength the same as Pepto-Bismol Ultra?
Yes. The bottle in our photos is labelled Pepto-Bismol Ultra, with 525mg bismuth subsalicylate in each 15ml dose: the 2x-per-ounce formula that was sold as Max-Strength. That's twice the concentration of Original Pepto-Bismol liquid.
What does it relieve?
Per the US Drug Facts: travellers' diarrhoea and diarrhoea, plus upset stomach from overindulgence in food and drink, including heartburn, indigestion, nausea, gas, belching and fullness.
How much do I take?
Adults and children 12 and over: shake well and use the dose cup. Take 15ml every half hour for upset stomach, or for diarrhoea 15ml every half hour or 30ml every hour, with no more than 8 doses (120ml) in 24 hours. For under-12s, ask a doctor.
How many doses are in the 4oz bottle?
About seven 15ml doses in 118ml, so at the label maximum one bottle could be used up in a day. For a longer trip, Pepto Bismol 16 oz 473ml Ultra Liquid Cherry has the same 525mg strength in a bigger bottle.
I usually take Original Pepto-Bismol — what changes?
The measuring changes: Original needs 30ml for the 525mg that Max-Strength gives in 15ml. Follow the cup and directions on whichever bottle you're using rather than carrying over a habit from Pepto Bismol Original Liquid.
Who shouldn't take it?
Don't take it if you're allergic to salicylates (including aspirin), take other salicylate products, have an ulcer, a bleeding problem, or bloody or black stools. Children and teenagers who have or are recovering from chickenpox or flu-like symptoms shouldn't use it because of Reye's syndrome, and check with a pharmacist or GP first if you take blood thinners or medicine for diabetes, gout or arthritis, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Why is my tongue black after taking it?
It's a known, temporary and harmless darkening of the tongue and/or stool, per the label. Stop and see a doctor if symptoms get worse or last more than 2 days, or if you get ringing in the ears or hearing loss.
