How to read a supplement label

UK supplements are sold as food supplements, and three parts of the label tell you most of what you need:

  • Serving size: the daily amount may be one capsule or four, which changes how long a tub lasts and its real cost per day.
  • Amount and %NRV: the nutrient reference value is the daily amount used for labelling. Single-nutrient products often give well over 100%, so add up the same nutrient across everything you take.
  • Form: magnesium glycinate or citrate, D3 or D2, methylcobalamin or cyanocobalamin. The form changes the price and can affect who it suits, such as vegans.

Always keep to the stated daily dose, and speak to a pharmacist if you take prescription medicine.

Vitamins & Supplements: your questions answered

Should I start with a multivitamin or single nutrients?

A multivitamin is the simplest way to cover a broad range at modest doses. Single nutrients make sense when you know you need more of one thing, such as vitamin D in winter or B12 on a vegan diet.

What does %NRV mean on a label?

It shows how much of the nutrient reference value, the standard daily amount used for labelling, one serving provides. 100% matches that reference amount; many single-nutrient products give more, so stay within the label dose.

Which supplements does the NHS recommend?

The NHS advises everyone to consider 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day in autumn and winter, and anyone trying for a baby to take 400 micrograms of folic acid daily until 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Can I take several supplements together?

Usually, but check for the same nutrient appearing in more than one product, such as zinc in a multivitamin and in a separate zinc capsule. If you take prescription medicine, ask a pharmacist first.

Do you sell vegan supplements?

Yes. Many products are labelled vegan, including Trace Minerals liquid ionic minerals and Applied Nutrition Berberine in vegan capsules. The product page and label confirm suitability for each item.
