Is TUMS Gas Relief for gas or for heartburn?
Both: each Chewy Bite pairs 750mg calcium carbonate, an antacid, with 80mg simethicone, an anti-gas ingredient. The label lists heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach, upset stomach with these symptoms, and the gas that comes with them.
How many can I take?
Adults and children aged 12 and over chew 1 or 2 tablets thoroughly as symptoms occur. Don't take more than 6 tablets in 24 hours, or use the maximum dose for more than 2 weeks unless a doctor advises it.
Do I need water with them?
No, they're chewable tablets with a crunchy outside and a soft centre, in lemon and strawberry flavours. The 28-tablet pot is small enough for a handbag or desk drawer.
Can I take them with my other medicines?
Check first: the label warns that antacids may interact with certain prescription drugs, so ask a doctor or pharmacist if you take one. The Canadian pack also says not to take them within 2 hours of another medicine.
Are they OK during pregnancy?
The US label keeps the same ceiling of 6 tablets in 24 hours if you're pregnant. Talk to your midwife, GP or pharmacist before using antacids regularly while pregnant.
When should I see a doctor instead?
If heartburn or gas keeps coming back for more than 2 weeks, stop treating it yourself and speak to a doctor or pharmacist. TUMS Gas Relief is meant for occasional symptoms, not ongoing ones.
