Supplements or topical products?

Supplements are foods, so the claims they can make are set by law. The nutrients with authorised claims in this area are biotin, zinc, selenium, copper and vitamin C. Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and normal skin, zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, nails and skin, and vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin. Collagen and hyaluronic acid have no authorised claims, so compare them on source, dose and format. Trace Minerals Ionic Biotin + Collagen combines biotin and collagen in one flavoured liquid.

Many of the acne products in Skin Care are over-the-counter medicines containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or sulfur. Read the leaflet, start with a lower strength if your skin is sensitive, and ask a pharmacist if you already use another acne treatment.

Should I start with a beauty supplement or a skin care product?

Which nutrients have authorised claims for hair, skin and nails?

Are the collagen products suitable for vegetarians or vegans?

No. Collagen comes from fish (marine) or cattle (bovine), so it is not vegetarian. Vegans can look at biotin products such as OstroVit Biotin VEGE instead.

Are the acne treatments suitable for teenagers?

Many acne washes and pads are used by teenagers, but age guidance differs by product, so check the label. A pharmacist can help choose a strength, and a GP should see acne that is severe or scarring.
