Probiotic Support

Probiotic Support is a short edit of three live-culture capsules: Trace Minerals Probiotic 55 Billion, a one-a-day multi-strain capsule, plus two women's formulas, Fairhaven Health IsoFresh and MRM Women's Probiotic. For more gut options, including Jarrow Fem-Dophilus and digestive enzymes, see the wider gut health range.

How to read a probiotic label

  • CFU (colony-forming units) is the number of live bacteria per serving. Trace Minerals Probiotic 55 Billion provides 55 billion CFU per capsule.
  • Strains are listed by genus, species and strain code, for example a Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium species followed by letters and numbers. More strains is not automatically better; the label shows what you are getting.
  • Count guarantee: check whether the CFU figure applies at manufacture or until the best-before date.
  • Storage: some products need refrigeration and others are shelf-stable. Follow the pack.

No health claims for probiotics are authorised in Great Britain, so we describe what is in each capsule rather than what it does.

General or women's formula?

If you have symptoms such as unusual discharge, itching or pain, see a GP or pharmacist first, as these may need treatment rather than a supplement.

More options are in Gut Health & Digestion, including Jarrow Fem-Dophilus, and in the vitamins section's Probiotics & Gut Support.

Probiotic Support: your questions answered

What does 55 billion CFU mean?

CFU stands for colony-forming units, a measure of live bacteria. A 55 billion CFU capsule contains that many viable cultures per serving, according to the label's guarantee.

Should I take a probiotic with food or on an empty stomach?

Follow each label. Trace Minerals Probiotic 55 Billion is taken as one capsule daily on an empty stomach, while other formulas may suggest taking it with a meal.

Do probiotics need to be kept in the fridge?

Some do and some do not, so check the pack. Trace Minerals Probiotic 55 Billion should be kept cool and dry.

Can I take a probiotic while on antibiotics?

Ask your pharmacist about timing. Many people take a probiotic a few hours apart from their antibiotic dose, but follow your prescriber's advice first.

Can I take a women's probiotic during pregnancy?

Check with your midwife or GP before starting any supplement in pregnancy. Fairhaven Health suggests the same for IsoFresh.
