The nutrients behind the immune claims

Several vitamins and minerals carry the authorised claim that they contribute to the normal function of the immune system, including vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, selenium, vitamin A, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12. This range concentrates on the three most shoppers look for:

  • Vitamin D3: drops such as Ultra Lyte Vitamin D3 4000IU + K2, and capsules or tablets from Essensey, OstroVit and Trec, often paired with vitamin K2. The NHS advises everyone in the UK to consider 10 micrograms (400 IU) of vitamin D a day in autumn and winter.
  • Zinc: NOW Foods Zinc Glycinate softgels, Essensey and Trec capsules, and Trace Minerals ionic zinc liquids.
  • Vitamin C: standard, sustained-release and bioflavonoid formulas from NOW Foods and Trec Nutrition, plus collagen blends with added vitamin C.

There are combined formats too: Trace Minerals Liquid Cal/Mag/Zinc, Trace Immunity gummies, Liquid Immunity+ and Max Hydrate Immunity effervescent tablets, which add vitamins and minerals to a drink. For single nutrients beyond immunity, browse Vitamins A-Z and Minerals.

Immunity: your questions answered

Which vitamins and minerals support the immune system?

Vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, selenium, vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, folate, copper and iron all contribute to the normal function of the immune system. Most shoppers here choose vitamin C, vitamin D or zinc, alone or combined.

How much vitamin D should I take?

The NHS advises adults and children over 4 to consider 10 micrograms (400 IU) a day in autumn and winter, and adults not to take more than 100 micrograms (4000 IU) a day unless a doctor advises it. Many products here contain more than 10 micrograms per serving, so check the label.

How much zinc is too much?

The NHS advises not taking more than 25 mg of zinc a day from supplements unless a doctor recommends it. Some liquids and capsules here are concentrated, so measure the label serving carefully and count the zinc in any multivitamin you take.

Can I take vitamin C, vitamin D and zinc together?

Yes, they are commonly taken together and some products already combine them. Add up the amounts from every product you take, including multivitamins, and stay within the label directions.

Are there immunity products for children?

Yes. Kids Immunity lists children's vitamin C drops, ChildLife liquids and Boiron homeopathic products; always follow the age guidance on the label.
