Read EPA and DHA, not the fish oil figure

The big number on the front of a fish oil pack is usually total oil. What counts is the EPA and DHA per daily serving: EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart, with the beneficial effect obtained from 250 mg of EPA and DHA a day, and DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal vision at 250 mg of DHA a day. Two examples from this range:

Omega 3-6-9 blends usually supply far less EPA and DHA per serving, so if those are what you want, choose a concentrated omega-3.

ALA: two different things

On labels, ALA can mean alpha-linolenic acid, the plant omega-3 in linseed oil, or alpha-lipoic acid, an unrelated sulphur compound. Trec Nutrition ALA 250, listed here, is alpha-lipoic acid at 250 mg per capsule, not an omega-3. It has no authorised health claim. Prefer to shop by goal? Omegas & Fatty Acids: your questions answered

Should I choose omega-3 or omega 3-6-9?

For most people, plain omega-3. UK diets usually provide plenty of omega-6 from vegetable oils, and the body makes omega-9 itself, so a 3-6-9 blend is mainly a choice for people who want several oils in one capsule.

How much EPA and DHA should I look for?

The authorised heart claim applies at 250 mg of EPA and DHA combined per day, so check the per-serving figure rather than total fish oil. Ultra Lyte and Trec Super Omega-3 both give well over 1000 mg per serving.

Are there vegetarian omega-3 options here?

Not at the moment: our omega-3 products are made from fish oil. Plant-based shoppers usually look for algae-based DHA supplements.

Can I take fish oil with blood-thinning medicine?

Speak to your GP or pharmacist first. High-dose fish oil may not be suitable alongside anticoagulant medicines.

Is MCT oil an omega fatty acid?

No. MCTs are saturated medium-chain fats, usually from coconut or palm oil, and provide no omega-3. We list them here because shoppers often compare them with other oils.
