How strong is OXY Rapid Spot Treatment?
It's 10% benzoyl peroxide, which OXY sells as maximum-strength acne treatment without a prescription. The US Drug Facts list it for the treatment of acne: it clears pimples, penetrates pores to control blackheads and whiteheads, and helps prevent new blemishes.
How do I apply it?
Cleanse first, then apply a thin layer over the affected area. The label says to start once a day and build to two or three times a day if needed, cutting back to once a day or every other day if dryness or peeling becomes bothersome.
Can I put it straight on a single spot?
Yes — the directions say to apply it directly to pimples for quicker results. It goes on white and dries clear, and once dry you can follow with a non-comedogenic moisturiser.
Will it bleach my towels and pillowcase?
It can. The label warns benzoyl peroxide may bleach hair and dyed fabrics, so let OXY dry fully before bed and use white or old pillowcases and towels while you're using it.
Can I use it with other acne products?
Carefully: the label says irritation and dryness are more likely if you use another topical acne medication at the same time, and to use only one at a time if irritation occurs. Keep it away from your eyes, lips and mouth, avoid unnecessary sun and wear sunscreen.
Who shouldn't use it?
Don't use it if you have very sensitive skin or are sensitive to benzoyl peroxide, and stop and ask a doctor or pharmacist if irritation becomes severe. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, check with a health professional first; the formula also contains hydrolysed soy protein and fragrance.
