What strength is PanOxyl Clarifying Exfoliant?
It's 2% salicylic acid in a 118ml (4 fl oz) leave-on liquid, labelled in the US as an acne treatment solution that clears and helps prevent acne. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, which is why PanOxyl says it unclogs pores and minimises their appearance.
How do I use it?
Shake well, cleanse, then apply a thin layer over the whole affected area, with no rinsing. Start once a day and build to two or three times a day only if your skin copes; if dryness or peeling bothers you, drop back to once a day or every other day.
Does it replace a face scrub?
For most people, yes: it exfoliates chemically, so there are no grains to rub into breakout-prone skin. Using a scrub on the same day as well tends to mean more dryness.
Can I use it with PanOxyl Acne Foaming Wash?
You can, but go slowly. The label warns that dryness and irritation are more likely when you use another topical acne medication at the same time, such as PanOxyl Acne Foaming Wash Benzoyl Peroxide 10%, which we also stock, so use only one if irritation appears.
What does the blue algae do?
PanOxyl adds blue algae (spirulina) extract and chamomile, which the brand says help calm irritation and redness while the salicylic acid works. They're skin-conditioning extras; the 2% salicylic acid is the active ingredient.
Can I use it while pregnant?
Ask first: the label says that if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, you should ask a health professional before use. It's for external use only, so keep it away from your eyes.
Do I need a moisturiser and SPF with it?
