What does Pepto-Bismol Original Liquid relieve?

Per the US label, Pepto-Bismol relieves travellers' diarrhoea, diarrhoea, and upset stomach due to overindulgence in food and drink, including heartburn, indigestion, nausea, gas, belching and fullness. The active ingredient is bismuth subsalicylate, 525mg in each 30ml dose.

How much do I take?

Adults and children 12 and over take 30ml (one dose, measured with the cup provided) every half hour as needed, or 60ml every hour for diarrhoea. Shake well first, and don't exceed 8 doses (240ml) in 24 hours.

How long can I keep taking it?

For diarrhoea, use it until the diarrhoea stops but for no more than 2 days, and drink plenty of clear fluids. Stop and ask a doctor if symptoms get worse or last more than 2 days, or if you notice ringing in the ears or loss of hearing.

Who shouldn't take it?

It contains salicylate, so don't take it if you're allergic to salicylates (including aspirin), take other salicylate products, or have an ulcer, a bleeding problem, or bloody or black stools. Children and teenagers who have or are recovering from chickenpox or flu-like symptoms shouldn't use it because of the risk of Reye's syndrome.

Can I take it with other medicines, or if I'm pregnant?

Ask a doctor or pharmacist first if you take medicines for thinning the blood, diabetes, gout or arthritis. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a health professional before use, and children under 12 should see a doctor.

Why has my tongue or stool gone dark?

It's expected: the label notes a temporary but harmless darkening of the stool and/or tongue while using Pepto-Bismol. It fades after you stop taking it.

Which bottle size should I choose?

Every size is the same original formula: 118ml holds just under 4 doses, 236ml nearly 8, 354ml nearly 12 and 473ml nearly 16 doses of 30ml. For a bag or suitcase, Pepto-Bismol Chewable Tablets are the portable alternative.
