What is Pepto-Bismol Cherry used for?
The label lists five symptoms: upset stomach, heartburn, indigestion, nausea and diarrhoea, including travellers' diarrhoea. Each 30ml dose contains 525mg of bismuth subsalicylate.
How much should I take?
Adults and children 12 and over take 30ml every half hour for upset stomach, heartburn, indigestion or nausea, or 60ml every hour for diarrhoea. Don't take more than 8 doses (240ml) in 24 hours, and stop after 2 days if diarrhoea hasn't settled.
Is the cherry version as strong as the pink original?
Yes — Pepto-Bismol Cherry is original strength, the same 525mg per 30ml as our Pepto-Bismol Original Liquid; only the flavour differs.
Can children take it?
Not under 12 without a doctor's advice. Children and teenagers who have or are recovering from chickenpox or flu-like symptoms shouldn't use it at all, because of the Reye's syndrome warning on the label.
Who should check with a pharmacist first?
Don't use it if you're allergic to salicylates such as aspirin, or if you have a stomach ulcer, a bleeding problem or black or bloody stools. Ask a pharmacist or GP first if you take blood thinners or medicines for diabetes, gout or arthritis, have a fever or mucus in your stool, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Why has my tongue or stool turned black?
That's a temporary, harmless darkening caused by the bismuth, and the label lists it as expected. It fades once you stop taking Pepto-Bismol.
How many doses are in the bottle?
236ml holds just under eight 30ml doses, which is about one day at the maximum dose.
