Your questions, answered
Are these soft chews or chewable tablets?
They're cherry-flavoured chewable tablets that you chew or let dissolve in your mouth, with no water needed. Each of the 30 contains 262mg of bismuth subsalicylate, the same active as Pepto-Bismol liquid.
Which symptoms does the label cover?
The box lists five: nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach and diarrhoea. The Drug Facts also cover travellers' diarrhoea and the gas, belching and fullness that come with overdoing food or drink.
What's the dose?
Adults and children 12 and over chew 2 tablets every 30 minutes as needed; for diarrhoea you can take 4 tablets every hour instead. Never exceed 16 tablets (8 doses) in 24 hours, and don't use it for diarrhoea for more than 2 days.
Why is my tongue dark after taking them?
Temporary, harmless darkening of the tongue or stool is a known effect of bismuth subsalicylate. Don't use Pepto-Bismol if you already have black or bloody stool, and stop and ask a doctor if you notice ringing in the ears or hearing loss.
I'm allergic to aspirin. Can I take them?
No — each tablet contains 99mg of salicylate, and the label says not to use it if you're allergic to salicylates or already take another salicylate. Ask a doctor or pharmacist first if you take blood thinners or medicine for diabetes, gout or arthritis.
Can children, teenagers or pregnant women use them?
Children under 12 should ask a doctor, and children and teenagers recovering from chickenpox or flu-like symptoms must not use them because of the risk of Reye's syndrome. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a health professional before use.
Cherry chewables or Pepto-Bismol liquid?
Same active ingredient and the same uses: the cherry chewables are easier to carry for travel or a desk drawer, while Pepto-Bismol Original Liquid, which we also stock, is measured by the dose cup. Each cherry chewable also contains 140mg of calcium.
