Your questions, answered
How many Original caplets make a dose?
Two. Each Pepto-Bismol Original caplet contains 262 mg of bismuth subsalicylate and a dose is 2 caplets swallowed with water, so the box of 24 holds 12 doses.
How often can I take them?
Adults and children 12 and over take 2 caplets every half hour as needed for upset stomach, heartburn, indigestion or nausea, or 4 caplets every hour for diarrhoea. The limit is 8 doses (16 caplets) in 24 hours, and no more than 2 days for diarrhoea.
Do the caplets taste of anything?
No — they're swallowed whole, not chewed, so there's none of the pink liquid's flavour. If you'd rather not swallow tablets, Pepto-Bismol Chewable Tablets and Pepto-Bismol Original Liquid, which we also sell, contain the same active ingredient.
Can children take Pepto-Bismol caplets?
Not without advice: the label says children under 12 should ask a doctor. Children and teenagers who have or are recovering from chickenpox or flu-like symptoms should not use Pepto-Bismol at all because of the risk of Reye's syndrome.
Is it safe if I take aspirin or blood thinners?
Check with a pharmacist first. Each caplet contains 99 mg of salicylate, so don't take it if you're allergic to aspirin or already take a salicylate, and ask a doctor or pharmacist before use if you take medicine to thin the blood or for diabetes, gout or arthritis.
When should I stop and see a doctor?
Stop if symptoms get worse or last more than 2 days, or if you get ringing in the ears or hearing loss. Ask a doctor before use if you have a fever or mucus in the stool, and don't use it at all with an ulcer, a bleeding problem, or bloody or black stool.
Original caplets or Pepto-Bismol Ultra Caplets?
Same uses, same pink caplet format and the same limit of 8 doses a day. Ultra packs 525 mg into each caplet, so one Ultra caplet replaces two Originals and a 24-caplet Ultra box holds 24 doses instead of 12.
