Our Berberine range has four products: Applied Nutrition Berberine 1000mg with AstraGin, Source Naturals Berberine HCl 500mg, OstroVit Berberine VEGE tablets and Essensey Berberine + Turmeric. All are plant-based capsules or tablets for adults; compare strength per serving, count and suitability for vegans below.
Berberine is a bright yellow, very bitter plant alkaloid found in barberry, goldenseal and related shrubs, with a long history in traditional herbal practice. It has no authorised health claim in the UK, so ignore social media promises: we list it by content and strength only. Most people take it with meals, at the serving on the label.
Applied Nutrition gives 1000mg a day in two capsules and Source Naturals gives 500mg per capsule. For OstroVit and Essensey, the strength per serving is on the label.
Berberine itself is plant-derived. Applied Nutrition uses vegan capsules, OstroVit tablets are labelled VEGE and Source Naturals uses vegetarian capsules.
Ask your pharmacist or GP first. Berberine is known to interact with a number of prescription medicines.
It is one of the most bitter plant compounds and stains bright yellow, so capsules and tablets are much easier to take. Swallow them whole with water and a meal.
AstraGin is a branded blend of astragalus and Panax notoginseng extracts that Applied Nutrition adds to its formula. It is listed on the label alongside the berberine.
