How much brewer's yeast is in each tablet?
650mg of dried, inactive brewer's yeast per tablet, so a three-tablet serving gives 1.95g with 1g of protein and 5 calories. NOW's label doesn't list vitamin amounts, so we don't quote B-vitamin figures for it.
How many tablets a day, and how long do 200 last?
NOW's US label says three tablets three times a day with food, which is nine a day, so the bottle lasts about 22 days at the full amount. One three-tablet serving a day stretches it to 66 days.
Is NOW Brewer's Yeast gluten-free?
No. The label says it contains wheat, because the yeast is derived from barley and wheat, so it isn't suitable for coeliacs or anyone avoiding gluten.
Will it ferment or bloat me like baker's yeast?
No, the yeast is dried and inactive, so it can't grow or ferment the way live baker's yeast does in dough. It's still a yeast product, though, so avoid it if you have a yeast allergy or sensitivity.
Can I take it with antidepressants or other medicines?
Check with your GP first. The label warns that brewer's yeast contains significant amounts of tyramine and says to consult a doctor if you take an MAO inhibitor or other medication, have Crohn's disease, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. It's for adults only.
Is it vegan?
Yes, NOW labels Brewer's Yeast vegetarian/vegan. Besides the yeast, the tablets contain hydroxypropyl cellulose, vegetable-source stearic acid and magnesium stearate, croscarmellose sodium and silicon dioxide, and NOW describes them as easier to swallow.
