  • Iron: a capsule with vitamins B and C, and a liquid ionic iron.

Single minerals or a combination?

If you want broad cover, a multi-mineral such as Trec Mineral Complex or a liquid like Trace Minerals Cal/Mag/Zinc keeps things simple. Choose a single mineral when you want more of one nutrient or a particular form, such as magnesium glycinate. Liquid ionic drops let you adjust the amount drop by drop, while capsules are tasteless and pre-measured. Check the form as well: glycinates, citrates and carbonates differ in price, tablet size and how much of the mineral each capsule provides.

NHS guidance on supplement amounts

The NHS gives these daily amounts from supplements as unlikely to cause harm for adults:

  • Magnesium: 400mg or less
  • Zinc: no more than 25mg unless a doctor advises it
  • Iron: 17mg or less
  • Calcium: 1,500mg or less
  • Selenium: 350μg or less
  • Potassium: 3,700mg or less, and older people should only take potassium on a doctor's advice

Add up every product you take, including multivitamins, before adding another mineral.

Minerals: your questions answered

Which mineral supplement should I start with?

Start with the one your diet is shortest of. Magnesium is our most popular choice, and a multi-mineral is the simplest option if you are unsure.

Can I take iron and calcium together?

It is better to take them at different times of day, because calcium can reduce how much iron you absorb. Zinc and iron in high doses can also compete, so space them out.

Does zinc affect copper?

Yes. Taking high doses of zinc reduces the amount of copper the body absorbs, which is one reason the NHS advises no more than 25mg of zinc from supplements a day.

Are liquid ionic minerals better than tablets?

They are a different format rather than better. Liquids let you fine-tune the amount and mix it into drinks, while tablets and capsules are tasteless and easier to carry.

Are your mineral supplements vegan?

Many are. Trace Minerals liquid ionic minerals and several of its capsules are labelled vegan, so check each product page or label for the exact status.
