Whey Protein

Whey protein concentrate is the everyday protein shake: made from milk, quick to mix and good value per serving. This range covers Trec Nutrition Whey 100, Booster Whey and BoogieWhey, BAD ASS Whey, LEVRONE Gold Whey, 10X Athletic Whey and Dorian Yates Shadowhey, in tubs from 700g to over 2kg.

How to read a whey label

Compare protein per serving and per 100 g rather than the front-of-pack headline. Trec Nutrition Whey 100 is 100% whey protein concentrate at 81.2 g protein per 100 g, about 24 g in a 30 g scoop, with 1.8 g sugars per 100 g. BAD ASS Whey Protein 2kg gives 22 g protein per serving and about 66 servings per bag. To compare value, divide the price by the number of servings on the label.

  • Concentrate: most of this range; the best price per gram of protein.
  • Hydrolysed: Dorian Yates Shadowhey Hydrolyzed is whey broken down into smaller peptides, at a premium price.
  • Isolate: if you want fewer carbs and less lactose, see Whey Isolate.

Choosing size and flavour

Buy a 700–900 g tub to try a flavour, then move to 2 kg or more once you have a favourite; the bigger bags cost less per shake. 10X Athletic Whey Protein comes in seven dessert flavours and Whey 100 in nine. Some Trec tubs include a free shaker, and the DY Nutrition bundles pair Shadowhey with creatine. For a slower evening shake look at Casein Protein, and for grab-and-go protein see Protein Bars & Snacks.

What whey can and cannot do

Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass and to the maintenance of muscle mass. Whey is a convenient way to reach your daily protein total; it does not replace meals, and more than your label serving brings no extra benefit.

Whey Protein: your questions answered

How many scoops of whey should I have a day?

Follow the label, which for most of our whey powders is one 30 g scoop giving 22 to 25 g of protein. One or two shakes a day closes the gap for most people, and more is not needed if your meals already supply plenty of protein.

Should I mix whey with water or milk?

Either works. Water keeps the shake lighter and lower in calories, while milk makes it creamier and adds extra protein and calories.

Is whey suitable if I'm lactose intolerant?

Whey concentrate contains some lactose, so it may not suit you. Whey isolates are filtered further and BAD ASS Zero Isolate is listed as lactose-free; a plant protein avoids milk entirely. Anyone with a milk allergy should avoid all whey.

What's the difference between Trec Whey 100 and Trec Protein 100?

Whey 100 is 100% whey concentrate at over 80% protein, aimed at gym users who want simple macros. Protein 100 is Trec's all-round high-protein shake, made for easy everyday drinking.

Can teenagers take whey protein?

Our whey powders are sold as adult sports nutrition. For teenagers, normal meals usually provide enough protein, so check the age guidance on the label and ask a GP or dietitian if unsure.
