Key nutrients and what the claims say

  • Folate contributes to maternal tissue growth during pregnancy. NHS advice is to take 400 micrograms of folic acid daily from before conception until 12 weeks of pregnancy. Trec Nutrition Folic Acid is a simple single-nutrient option.
  • Vitamin D: the NHS recommends a daily 10 microgram supplement during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Zinc contributes to normal fertility and reproduction, and selenium to normal spermatogenesis; both feature in the men's formulas.
  • DHA: maternal intake contributes to the normal brain and eye development of the foetus and breastfed infants, with 200 mg DHA daily on top of the 250 mg EPA and DHA advised for adults. See PeaPod Omega-3.

Avoid supplements containing vitamin A as retinol, including fish liver oils, when pregnant.

Tests and accessories

BFP ovulation and early pregnancy strips, the Fertil Focus ovulation microscope and BabyDance fertility lubricant are not supplements; follow each pack's instructions. If you have been trying for a while, have an irregular cycle or take medication, talk to your GP before starting supplements.

Fertility & Pregnancy: your questions answered

When should I start taking folic acid?

The NHS advises 400 micrograms of folic acid every day from before you conceive until you are 12 weeks pregnant. If you did not take it beforehand, start as soon as you know you are pregnant; your GP may prescribe a higher dose if you are at increased risk.

Are there fertility supplements for men?

Yes. FertilAid for Men, MotilityBoost, CountBoost and FH Pro for Men are formulated for men, and zinc contributes to normal fertility and reproduction. See the Male Fertility collection or the couples' value packs.

Can I keep taking a fertility supplement once I am pregnant?

Not usually. Fairhaven Health advises stopping FertilAid for Women once a test confirms pregnancy and switching to a prenatal multivitamin, partly because it contains herbs.

Are the BFP test strips single use?

Yes, each strip is used once. The packs contain several strips, so you can test across your cycle or repeat a pregnancy test as directed on the leaflet.

Do you stock breastfeeding products?

Yes, Milkies Nursing Postnatal Multivitamin and Milkies Nursing Time herbal tea. The NHS recommends a daily 10 microgram vitamin D supplement while breastfeeding; check any new product with your midwife or health visitor.
