How much vitamin D?

The NHS advises a daily supplement of 10 micrograms (400 IU) of vitamin D in autumn and winter, and all year if you rarely get sun on your skin. One microgram equals 40 IU. The NHS limits are 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) a day for adults and children aged 11 to 17, 50 micrograms (2,000 IU) for children aged 1 to 10, and 25 micrograms (1,000 IU) for babies under 12 months.

The 4000 IU products are not suitable for children under 11.

D3 alone or with K2?

Vitamin D contributes to normal absorption of calcium, the maintenance of normal bones, teeth and muscle function, and the normal function of the immune system. Vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and to normal blood clotting. Trec Nutrition Vitamin D3+K2 (MK-7) and Essensey D3 + K2 MK-7 use MK-7, a form of vitamin K2. OstroVit Vitamin D3 + K2 + Calcium adds calcium, which is also needed for the maintenance of normal bones. If you take warfarin or another anticoagulant, speak to your GP before taking any vitamin K.

Some omega-3 capsules also contain D3, so see Omega 3 and count them in your total. For calcium and related products, browse Bone Support or the full Vitamins A-Z.

Vitamin D: your questions answered

Is 4000 IU of vitamin D3 too much?

4,000 IU (100 micrograms) is the NHS maximum for adults and children aged 11 to 17, not a daily target. If you choose a 4000 IU product, do not take other vitamin D from multivitamins or omega-3 combinations on top.

When should I take vitamin D?

With a meal, at any time of day. Vitamin D is fat-soluble, so food containing some fat helps absorption.

Should I take vitamin D all year round?

The NHS advises a daily 10 microgram supplement in autumn and winter. If you are rarely outdoors, usually cover your skin outside or have dark skin, it suggests considering one all year.

Can children take these vitamin D products?

Our 4000 IU products are adult strength and not suitable for under-11s. Children aged 1 to 10 should not have more than 50 micrograms (2,000 IU) a day, so choose an age-appropriate product and follow its label.

Is vitamin D3 vegan?

Not always. D3 is usually made from lanolin, from sheep's wool, so check the label for a vegan source such as lichen.
