Gels, drinks or powder?

Planning your fuelling

For efforts longer than about 60 to 90 minutes, many endurance athletes aim for 30 to 60 g of carbohydrate per hour. A common pattern is the first gel 30 to 45 minutes in, then one every 30 to 45 minutes. Practise in training, never for the first time on race day, and mix drinks at the label ratio, because an over-concentrated bottle is a classic cause of stomach trouble.

Carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions that meet the legal composition criteria contribute to the maintenance of endurance performance during prolonged endurance exercise.

Caffeine capsules

Trec Endurance Caffeine 200 Plus is a caffeine product, and Herbal Energy is a plant-based capsule; check its label for caffeine. UK food safety guidance is no more than 200 mg of caffeine in a single serving and 400 mg a day from all sources, including coffee. Caffeine products are not recommended for children or pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Endurance Fuel: your questions answered

How many energy gels do I need for a marathon?

Many runners take a gel every 30 to 45 minutes after the first half hour, which works out at roughly five to eight for a three to four hour marathon. Test your plan on long training runs first.

Do I need to drink water with an energy gel?

Yes. Take each gel with a few mouthfuls of water so it is absorbed comfortably and you stay hydrated.

What is the difference between Carbo Sport and Endurance Marathon?

Carbo Sport is a straight carbohydrate powder you can use in drinks or shakes. Endurance Marathon is a complete race drink that combines carbohydrate with the minerals lost in sweat.

How much caffeine is safe before a race?

UK guidance for healthy adults is no more than 200 mg in one serving and 400 mg a day in total. Count coffee and caffeinated gels, and avoid caffeine products if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or under 18.

Can I use Carbo Sport for weight training?

Yes. Many lifters add it to a protein shake to raise the carbohydrate and calories. Adjust the scoops to your needs.
