What are the active ingredients in Salonpas patches?
Each patch contains methyl salicylate 10%, menthol 6.0% and camphor 3.1%, all listed on the US Drug Facts as topical analgesics. The patches measure 7.2 x 4.6cm and aren't made with natural rubber latex.
What is the Salonpas patch used for?
The label's stated use is temporary relief of minor aches and pains of muscles and joints associated with simple backache, arthritis, strains, bruises and sprains.
How do I apply it, and how long can I wear it?
For adults and children aged 12 and over: clean and dry the area, peel the patch from its film and apply it to the sore spot, no more than 3 to 4 times a day. Remove each patch after at most 8 hours; for children under 12, consult a doctor.
Can I use it if I'm allergic to aspirin?
Talk to a doctor or pharmacist first. Methyl salicylate is a salicylate, and the label's allergy alert says anyone prone to allergic reactions from aspirin or salicylates should consult a doctor before use.
Can I use it with a heat pad or under a bandage?
No. The label says not to use it with a heating pad, not to bandage tightly, and not to apply it to wounds or damaged skin; keep it away from the eyes, mucous membranes and rashes.
When should I stop using the patches?
Stop and ask a doctor if your skin reacts with redness, itching, rash, burning, swelling or blistering, if the condition worsens, or if symptoms last more than 7 days or clear up and come back within a few days. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a health professional before using Salonpas.
