What is HemCalm Ointment used for?
The label says it temporarily relieves haemorrhoid symptoms such as burning, itching, swelling, pain and discomfort, and helps shrink swollen haemorrhoids. HemCalm Ointment is a homeopathic medicine, and Boiron states its claims are based on traditional homeopathic practice, not accepted medical evidence.
How often can I apply it?
Up to 4 times a day, for adults and children 12 and over. Where practical, wash the area with mild soap and warm water, pat it dry with soft tissue, then apply the ointment to the outside of the affected area; children under 12 should see a doctor.
What are the active ingredients?
Three plant-based homeopathic actives, each at 1X HPUS 1.3%: Aesculus hippocastanum (horse chestnut), Collinsonia canadensis (stone root) and Hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel). They sit in a white petrolatum base, and the tube is labelled paraben-free.
Can I use it inside the rectum?
No — the label says it is for external use only and must not be put into the rectum with fingers, an applicator or any other device. For internal symptoms Boiron makes HemCalm Suppositories, which we also stock.
Can I use HemCalm after giving birth or while breastfeeding?
The label lists relief of haemorrhoid symptoms following childbirth among its uses, but it also says to ask a health professional before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Your midwife, health visitor or pharmacist can confirm HemCalm Ointment suits you.
When should I see a doctor instead?
Ask a doctor before using it if there is any bleeding, and stop and see one if symptoms last more than 7 days or get worse. Don't go over the daily maximum unless a doctor tells you to.
Ointment, suppositories or tablets?
The ointment works where you apply it, on the outside. HemCalm Suppositories are the internal format and HemCalm Tablets dissolve under the tongue; we stock all three, and Boiron's own site suggests pairing the ointment with the tablets.
