Your questions, answered
What's in each tablet?
300mg of horse chestnut seed extract standardised to 20% aescin (60mg aescin), plus a 405mg blend of witch hazel bark, butcher's broom root, dong quai root and ginkgo leaf extract. That's 705mg of herbs per tablet, with sorbitol, stearic acid, silica and magnesium stearate to bind it.
How do I take Horse Chestnut Vein Strength?
One tablet twice a day between meals, rather than with food. At two a day, the 90-tablet bottle lasts 45 days.
What is aescin, and why is it standardised?
Aescin (escin) is the main group of active compounds in horse chestnut seed, and Planetary Herbals standardises the extract to 20% so every tablet carries the same 60mg. Horse chestnut has no authorised health claims in the UK, so we describe the formula rather than promise results.
Who should check with a doctor first?
The label says to consult a healthcare professional if you're pregnant, may become pregnant, are breastfeeding, take blood-thinning medication or regularly take aspirin. The blend includes ginkgo and dong quai, which is one reason for the blood-thinner caution.
Who formulated it?
Michael Tierra, L.Ac., O.M.D., the herbalist behind the Planetary Herbals range, which blends Western and Chinese herbs. Here that means European horse chestnut, witch hazel and butcher's broom alongside Chinese dong quai.
Tablets or the Planetary Herbals Horse Chestnut Cream?
The Vein Strength tablets are taken by mouth, while Planetary Herbals Horse Chestnut Cream (2oz or 4oz, both in stock) is massaged into the skin of the legs. Some people use both, as they work by completely different routes.
Individual results may vary.
