What is alpha-lipoic acid?
A sulphur-containing fatty acid your body makes in small amounts, also found in foods such as spinach, broccoli and organ meats. It has no authorised health claims in the UK, so we describe NOW Alpha Lipoic Acid by its dose rather than promise effects.
Should I take it with food?
NOW's US label simply says one capsule daily, while the Canadian version of the label suggests taking it with meals. Pick a regular time with a meal if capsules on an empty stomach don't suit you.
Can I take it if I have diabetes?
Talk to your GP first. The Canadian label advises consulting a practitioner if you have diabetes and warns that sweating, paleness, chills, headache, dizziness or confusion can be signs of low blood sugar.
Is it vegan?
Yes, NOW labels it vegetarian/vegan, in a hypromellose capsule with rice flour, vegetable-source stearic acid and silicon dioxide. It isn't made with wheat, gluten, soy, corn, milk, egg, fish, shellfish or tree nut ingredients.
