What's in Blistex Medicated Mint Balm?
Three active ingredients: dimethicone 2% as the lip protectant, plus octinoxate 6.6% and octisalate 4.4% as sunscreens, which give the stick its SPF 15. The waxy base includes beeswax, cocoa seed butter, lanolin, petrolatum, camphor and menthol.
Why does it tingle when I put it on?
That cool, minty feel of Medicated Mint Balm comes from the camphor and menthol in the base. If it stings or a rash appears, stop using it; the label says to stop and ask a doctor if a rash occurs.
Can I use it on cracked lips?
The label lists temporary protection and relief of chapped or cracked lips as a use, but it also says not to use it on damaged or broken skin. If your lips are split open or bleeding, let them heal first or ask a pharmacist.
How do I get the SPF 15 protection?
Apply liberally 15 minutes before going into the sun and reapply at least every 2 hours. If you're swimming or sweating, the Drug Facts say to use a water-resistant sunscreen as well.
Is it suitable for children?
For babies under 6 months the label says to ask a doctor. Keep the stick out of children's reach, and if any is swallowed, get medical help straight away.
Is Blistex Medicated Mint Balm vegan?
No. It contains beeswax, lanolin and lanolin oil, so it isn't vegan and isn't a good choice if lanolin irritates your skin.
Does heat affect it?
Yes. The pack asks you to protect the stick from excessive heat and direct sun, so don't leave the 4.25g Medicated Mint Balm on a car dashboard or sunny windowsill.
