What is Blistex Lip Ointment for?
Per its US Drug Facts, Blistex Medicated Lip Ointment temporarily relieves pain and itching from minor lip irritation or cold sores, and temporarily protects and helps relieve chapped or cracked lips. The 0.21oz (6g) tube fits a pocket or wash bag.
What are the active ingredients?
Camphor 0.5%, menthol 0.625% and phenol 0.5% as external analgesics, plus dimethicone 1.1% as a lip protectant. The camphor and menthol give the tingle you feel when you put it on.
How often can I apply it?
Adults and children 2 years and older apply it to the affected area no more than 3 to 4 times a day. For children under 2, ask a doctor first.
Can I use it on a cold sore?
Yes — relief of pain and itching associated with cold sores is one of its labelled uses. Stop and ask a doctor if it gets worse, lasts more than 7 days, or clears up and comes back within a few days.
Is it suitable if I'm allergic to lanolin?
No — lanolin is one of the inactive ingredients, along with beeswax, petrolatum, mineral oil, flavours and sodium saccharin. Check the full list on the pack if you have other sensitivities.
Are there any warnings?
It's for external use only: keep it out of your eyes, don't use it on deep or puncture wounds, animal bites or serious burns, and don't spread it over large areas or under a bandage. If it's swallowed, get medical help straight away.
Ointment or a Blistex balm?
The ointment is the medicated tube for sore, cracked lips and cold sores, limited to 3 to 4 applications a day. For everyday stick protection we also stock Blistex Lip Balm and Blistex Medicated Mint Balm; check each one's own directions.
