How strong is Desitin Maximum Strength paste?
It contains 40% zinc oxide, the highest level in the Desitin range, in a thick paste. Its US label says it helps treat and prevent nappy rash and protects chafed skin by sealing out wetness.
How should I apply it at a nappy change?
Change wet or soiled nappies promptly, then clean the area and let it dry. Apply the paste as often as needed, especially at bedtime or whenever a nappy will be on for a long time.
Should I rub it in fully?
No, a visible layer is fine, because the zinc oxide works as a barrier on top of the skin. At the next change, wipe away the soiled paste gently rather than scrubbing every trace off sore skin.
When should we stop and see a doctor?
The label says to stop and ask a doctor if the rash gets worse, lasts more than 7 days, or clears up and comes back within a few days. Speak to a pharmacist or GP sooner if the skin is broken, blistered or bleeding, or your baby seems unwell.
Paste or Desitin Daily Defense cream: which do I need?
Use the Maximum Strength paste, with its 40% zinc oxide, when the rash is already red and sore. Desitin Daily Defense, which we also stock, is a lighter cream for routine protection at every change, so many parents keep both.
Anything else to know before using it?
Desitin is for external use only. Keep it away from the eyes and out of children's reach, and get medical help if any is swallowed. The 113 g tube is paraben-free, but zinc oxide can mark clothing, so use bodysuits you don't mind staining.
