Beta-Alanine

Beta-alanine on its own, for people who build their own pre-training stack or want to take it daily alongside creatine. Choose Trec Nutrition Beta-Alanine Powder in Grapefruit, White Cola or Watermelon, or Trec Beta-Alanine 700 capsules for precise, taste-free servings.

What beta-alanine is

Beta-alanine is a non-essential amino acid that the body combines with histidine to make carnosine, which is stored in muscle. It is a fixture of high-intensity training stacks and a common ingredient in pre-workouts. There is no authorised health claim for beta-alanine, so we describe it by its content only. Unlike caffeine it is taken every day rather than just before a session, because carnosine builds up gradually over several weeks.

Powder or capsules?

  • Trec Beta-Alanine Powder 180g: cheaper per serving and flexible on dose. White Cola blends into most mixed drinks; Grapefruit is sharper and Watermelon lighter.
  • Trec Beta-Alanine 700 caps: 90 capsules with no mixing or flavour, which suits travel and anyone who forgets a powder.

Whichever you choose, take the serving on the label daily and do not exceed it.

The tingle, and stacking

A harmless tingling on the face, neck or hands (paraesthesia) is the best-known side effect of beta-alanine. It usually fades as you get used to it, and splitting the daily amount into smaller servings with food helps. Many people pair beta-alanine with creatine, which does carry an authorised claim: creatine increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high intensity exercise, with the benefit obtained from a daily intake of 3 g. Check the labels on your pre-workout too, as many already contain beta-alanine. For other single amino acids, see Amino Acids.

Beta-Alanine: your questions answered

Why does beta-alanine make my skin tingle?

The tingling is called paraesthesia and is a common, harmless reaction to beta-alanine. Smaller split servings taken with food usually reduce it.

Do I take beta-alanine only on training days?

No. Beta-alanine works by building up carnosine levels over weeks, so it is taken daily at the label serving, including rest days.

Should I choose the powder or the capsules?

They contain the same ingredient. The powder is cheaper per serving and mixes into a training drink; the capsules are taste-free and easier to carry.

Can I take beta-alanine with my pre-workout?

You can, but check your pre-workout label first. Many pre-workouts already contain beta-alanine, so add up the total and stay within the serving guidance on each product.

Can I take beta-alanine with creatine?

Yes, it is one of the most common pairings. Take each at the serving on its label; creatine carries the authorised claim at 3 g a day.
