What's in a daily serving?
Two capsules give 22 vitamins and minerals, including 70mcg vitamin D3, 1,360mcg DFE folate as methylfolate, 16mcg vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin), 5mg B6, 18mg iron, 150mcg iodine, 15mg zinc and 70mcg selenium. There's no DHA or omega-3 in the formula.
How do I take it, and how long does a bottle last?
Two capsules once a day with a meal. The 60-capsule bottle of Milkies Nursing Postnatal holds 30 servings, a one-month supply.
What do these nutrients do while I'm breastfeeding?
Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system; folate, B6 and B12 contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue; and iron contributes to normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin. Iodine contributes to normal thyroid function.
Is 70mcg of vitamin D too much?
It's well above the 10mcg a day the NHS advises for breastfeeding mothers, but below the 100mcg daily upper limit for adults. Don't add another vitamin D supplement on top without checking with your GP or pharmacist.
Can I take it while I'm pregnant?
No — the label says it's not recommended for pregnant women. During pregnancy, Fairhaven's PeaPod Prenatal Multivitamins, which we also stock, are the range's prenatal option; Nursing Postnatal is for after the birth.
Is it vegetarian, and why the iron warning?
Yes — it comes in a vegetarian cellulose capsule. Because each serving has 18mg iron, the label warns that accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6, so keep the bottle well out of reach.
Can I take it with Milkies Nursing Time Tea?
Yes — the tea is a caffeine-free herbal blend with no added vitamins or minerals, so the two don't double up on nutrients. If you take any medicines, show both to your pharmacist.
