I'm sick of buying test strips every month - how does a saliva microscope work?
As oestrogen rises before ovulation, dried saliva forms distinctive fern-like crystal patterns. Fertil Focus is a pocket microscope: dab a little saliva on the lens, let it dry, and look for ferning to spot your fertile window - reusable cycle after cycle, so the strip repurchasing stops.
Is it complicated to read the patterns?
There is a short learning curve of a cycle or two while you learn your own ferning, which is normal. First thing in the morning before eating, drinking or brushing teeth gives the cleanest sample - the instructions walk you through example images.
Microscope or BFP ovulation strips - which should I trust?
They read different signals: the scope tracks the oestrogen rise leading into your fertile window, strips catch the later LH surge. Plenty of women run both - scope daily for the early warning, a strip to confirm. Neither is contraception, and neither diagnoses anything.
Will it work for me if my cycles are irregular?
You can still observe ferning, but irregular cycles make any home method harder to interpret - and persistently irregular cycles are worth a GP conversation in their own right.
