Your questions, answered
How does Fertile Focus work?
Fertile Focus is a lipstick-sized microscope for looking at a dried drop of your saliva. Around your fertile window, saliva can dry in a fern-like crystal pattern, and the box shows the three stages to compare against: not fertile, transitional and fertile.
When and how should I test?
Test first thing in the morning, before eating, drinking, smoking or brushing your teeth. Put a small drop of saliva on the lens, let it dry completely (usually a few minutes), then light the scope and turn the eyepiece to focus.
Do I need to buy refills or strips?
No. Fertile Focus has no strips or cartridges: you clean the lens and reuse the same scope every cycle. Store it in a cool, dry place below 30°C, as the box directs.
Why can't I see any ferning?
Ferning only shows around the fertile window, so dots and specks are normal for much of your cycle. A sample taken after food, drink or toothpaste can hide the pattern, and most women need a cycle or two to learn their own; if your cycles are very irregular, talk to your GP.
Fertile Focus or BFP ovulation strips?
They look for different signs. Fertile Focus shows saliva ferning, while Fairhaven Health BFP Ovulation Test Strips, which we also stock, detect the LH surge in urine; plenty of couples use the scope daily and a strip to confirm.
Can I use it as contraception?
No. The box states the device should not be used as contraception and that no product can guarantee pregnancy. It is for in vitro diagnostic use only, not for internal use.
