What is the difference between folic acid, folate, and methylfolate?
Vitamin B9 is typically referred to as folic acid (the synthetic form found in fortified foods and many vitamin supplements) or folate (the form that naturally occurs in foods). Both forms must be converted by the body to the final bioactive form called L-methylfolate (5-MTHF). This bioactive form can enter cells and help support the body's functions.
